In the wake of a violent labor unrest in the readymade garment sector in the 3rd week of May 2006, the government formed the Wage Board on May 31st and asked it (wage board) to recommend a new pay scale for the garment workers within 90 days. A tripartite meeting of the Government the garment Owners and workers representatives also agreed to implement a series of decision in phases to address the labor unrest issue of this sector. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the garment Owners and workers representatives was also signed on June 12 in this regard. Meanwhile the six members of wage board sat together several meetings but yet the things are at stake due to the reluctant position of the owners to offering a reasonable wage for the workers.

• Garment workers are demanding TK. 3000.00 (USD $42.86 ) as basic minimum wage.
• The independent member from the wage board who recommended TK.1800.00 (USD $26.08 ) as the minimum basic wage for the workers which all together gross salary of around TK. 2650.00 (USD $38.40 ) a month.
• While the garment owners offering TK.1300.00 (USD $18.84 ) as the minimum wage for the workers.
